Soccer: Hoddle may be kept waiting

Confusion still reigns as to whether Glenn Hoddle will take up his duties as new Tottenham boss this morning.

Confusion still reigns as to whether Glenn Hoddle will take up his duties as new Tottenham boss this morning.

Spurs announced his appointment at a press conference on Friday and insisted that the dispute over compensation to Southampton had been resolved.

However, Saints chairman Rupert Lowe is adamant that he has yet to officially sanction Hoddle’s switch to White Hart Lane.

Lowe said: ‘‘There is quite a list of requirements on a legal document that have to be agreed.

‘‘As I hold Glenn’s registration, I insist they be met before he takes over at the club.

‘‘I have to say that the way Spurs have handled this entire matter has not been in the essence of good business practice but there is a document that must be signed before Glenn can take over.’’

John Gorman, Hoddle’s number two at Southampton who has also joined him at Spurs, added last night: ‘‘Glenn and I will make our way to the training ground in the morning but will not start until everything is signed.

‘‘It is frustrating that we have not been given the green light to start. The Southampton chairman accepted the compensation.

‘‘The sooner we get this situation sorted out the better so we can get on with the big job we face in the FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal next Sunday.’’
