A man has died following a fire at a house in County Waterford early this morning.

A man has died following a fire at a house in County Waterford early this morning.

Fire services received a call at 7.33am and units from Carrick-on-Suir and Kilmacthomas arrived at the house in Clonea Power at 7.50am.

On arrival they found the single-storey detached house substantially damaged by the blaze.

The man, who lived at the house and was found dead at the scene, has been named locally as Conor Phelan, aged 52, a single man from Clonea Power.

Locals said his brother was notified of the incident as he was making his way to the Punchestown Racing festival.

Gardaí in Carrick-on-Suir are continuing to investigate the cause of the blaze and can be contacted at 051-642040.
