McCreevy accused of using ‘creative accounting’

The Green Party is accusing Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy of creative accounting in relation to the proposed National Development Finance Agency.

The Green Party is accusing Finance Minister Charlie McCreevy of creative accounting in relation to the proposed National Development Finance Agency.

Reports today suggest that the European Commission will oppose this body on the grounds that it may breach EU borrowing limits.

The government hoped to raise some €10bn through the N.D.F.A to fund infrastructure projects.

Deputy Dan Boyle of the Greens says Minister McCreevy is engaging in Enron type accounting: "The European commission is questioning this. Just as it has already questioned the benefits of changing over from the punt to the Euro this year.

"So because of that, we have a Minister for Finance, who is using measures, that if this was a private company, would call for the kind of investigation we'd seen in industries like Enron."
