New figures show that the Children’s Court dealt with 12,600 criminal matters last year.
According to the Court service’s records, almost 200 juveniles were imprisoned, 22 were sent to industrial school and 19 to reformatory school.
However, 133 cases were struck out against young offenders because there was no suitable place available for them to go.
Also, the number of bench warrants issued against minors was twice that laid against adults.
The report concluded that of all the children before the court last year, just five were dealt with through community service.
The Children’s Court deals with children up to the age of 17 but some are as young as aged eight.
