The annual report, which includes greater Dublin, showed that over a seven year period from 1992, deaths from cancer dropped by 8% among men and 10% among women.

Dr Brian O’Herlihy, the Eastern Health Board’s public health director, said there had been particular success in cutting deaths from breast cancer in women aged 65, where the figure had gone down by close to 20%.

Lung cancer-related deaths in men dropped almost a fifth also, but the fall among women was only 5.5%.
