One man has died after plunging into the icy waters of the Royal Canal in Dublin, while another man is recovering after he too was taken from the canal in a separate incident.

Both incidents happened in the early hours of this morning as temperatures across Dublin plunged.

The first accident happened at Binn's Bridge on the canal when gardai and a fire crew responded to reports of a man in his 20s in the water.

One garda jumped into the canal to rescue the casualty and both the garda and the man were taken to the Mater hospital to be treated for hypothermia.

The garda recovered but the man, who has not been named, died at about 6am.

A short time later, another rescue operation was mounted when a man was spotted in the canal at Cross Guns in Phibsboro.

He is now recovering in the Mater.
