Trocaire has welcomed a recommendation from the Law Reform Committee that legislation be introduced to regulate charities.

In a study of the charity sector, the committee called for an independent registrar of charities, as well as increased transparency and accountability.

Trocaire spokesman Eamonn Meehan said: "This legislation would govern the registration of charities, how charities would operate, how they would raise their funds, how they would report and how they would be audited. Trocaire has for many years wanted this legislation to be introduced and we have talked to successive Government's about it."
