A young motorist was charged today with dangerous driving causing the death of an elderly pedestrian last February in Cork city.

Donagh Roche, 25, of Shalom, Blarney Road, Clogheen, Cork, was charged with dangerous driving at Parnell Bridge, Cork, on February 15 causing the death of Thomas Crowley.

The late Mr Crowley was 70 and from Deerpark Mews in Cork City and was crossing the road when the accident occurred.

Garda Myles Galwey formally arrested Roche and charged him with the single count. He made no reply after caution.

Inspector Michael Comyns said the Director of Public Prosecutions had directed trial by indictment.

There was no State objection to the accused being remanded on bail for his next appearance at Cork District Court.

Judge Uinsin MacGruairc adjourned the case until October 19, on the application of Inspector Comyns for preparation and service of a book of evidence.

It is anticipated the case will then be sent forward eventually to Cork Circuit Criminal Court.

The defendant is represented by Ernest Cantillon, solicitor.

The accused, who was dressed in a dark suit, was in court with members of his family.
