A couple suspected of being terrorists were shot dead after using their baby as a human shield when they were surrounded by police in Kenya.

The pair also threw grenades at police who had tracked them down to a flat they were staying at in Nairobi. Five police officers were injured by the grenades.

Augustine Nthumbi, the officer in charge of the Githurai Kimbo area on Nairobi’s outskirts, said investigators raided the flat where the couple were staying following a tip and ordered them out of their house.

Nthumbi said the couple refused to surrender, threw grenades and used their eight-month-old baby as a human shield.

Police have not confirmed affiliations but the use of grenades falls within a pattern of attacks by the Somali-based terror group al-Shabab.

Kenya has experienced a string of grenade and gun attacks blamed on the a -Qaida-linked group.
