Pat Rafter has decided to retire from the professional tennis circuit, according to reports in his native Australia.

The 28-year-old is reported in Australian newspaper The Melbourne Age as saying: "I've got other things to do in my life."

The former US Open champion has been suffering from a shoulder injury, and had surgery on it 15 months ago. He reportedly intends to end his playing career this year.

Rafter was a losing finalist at last year's Wimbledon Championships.

But he was forced to retire during his first match at last month's Davis Cup final against Spain after suffering a mysterious bout of cramps.
