Allan McGregor was today waiting to discover whether an attack in Glasgow city centre had left him with a fractured eye socket, according to his fiancee.

The injuries Rangers goalkeeper McGregor sustained after being set upon in the early hours of Sunday morning saw him omitted from the Scotland squad yesterday and he could also miss Sunday’s Old Firm derby.

Fiancee Leah Shevlin told the Scottish Sun: “The bone under his left eye might be broken, but we are waiting on the results of a CT scan.

“His face is bruised and swollen.”

She added: “His clothes are slashed. It’s lucky he was wearing a heavy shirt otherwise he could have been in a lot of trouble.”

McGregor required treatment at Southern General Hospital for his injuries, which were sustained on Bath Street according to Strathclyde Police, who yesterday confirmed they had received an assault complaint.

Shevlin revealed she discovered McGregor unconscious in the street near their apartment.

She added: “He didn’t have a clue what was going on. There was quite a lot of blood. It was a horrible experience. Allan doesn’t know how he got home.

“He doesn’t know who did it and he doesn’t know where it happened. He’s had a fright and he’s shocked.”

Responding to reports McGregor had been out celebrating Celtic striker Cillian Sheridan’s birthday at Karbon nightclub, Shevlin said: “He had been in Moskito playing pool, not doing any harm. He wasn’t properly out and about and he wasn’t at anyone’s party.

“He just went down to Karbon to get a friend.”
