The National Disease Surveillance Centre is warning young people about rising levels of sexually transmitted diseases.

They said the latest figures show that STDs are again on the increase in Ireland particularly in the 18-25 age group.

The figures were released today at the launch of the centre's annual report, which also shows a dramatic drop in the number of meningitis cases since the introduction of the national vaccination

programme.

Director of the NDSC, Dr Darina O'Flanagan, said they are very concerned about the impact of STDs on young people who may not be aware of the risks.

She said: "It’s dreadful to see diseases like syphilis and gonnerea, diseases we thought had been consigned to history, now re-emerging in Irish young people."
