French police today banned a street party whose organisers planned to serve alcohol and pork sausage in a heavily Muslim neighbourhood of Paris.

Police said the “sausage and booze” party, which was due to be held on Friday, was banned because it could be viewed as a provocation in the Goutte-d’Or neighbourhood of northern Paris, where Muslims have to pray on the streets on Fridays because there are not enough local mosques.

Organisers said they were arranging the party to protest against Islam’s encroachment on traditional French values in the neighbourhood. The party was backed by several far-right groups.

Muslim groups had announced a rival party serving halal food instead of the alcohol and pork, which are banned under Islam.
