The Government has launched a scheme to house elderly emigrants who want to return to Ireland after living abroad for decades.
Housing and Urban Renewal Minister Bobby Molloy said tonight the aim would be to provide accommodation for those coming back to Ireland after years overseas.
Homes will be provided by local community-based voluntary housing bodies and will apply to people wanting to return whose circumstances mean that they are unable obtain suitable accommodation for themselves out of their own resources.
Up to 95% of the cost of the scheme will be funded by the Environment and Local Government Department.
Mr Molloy said: ‘‘I am very happy to announce this initiative, which I believe will provide opportunities for elderly emigrants wishing to return.
‘‘The voluntary housing sector is particularly well-qualified to meet the needs of our elderly emigrants and I believe they will respond positively to this initiative.’’
