The amount of energy-related carbon waste released into the atmosphere last year was up more than 50% on the 1990 level, according to new figures out today.

Sustainable Energy Ireland says energy use in Ireland resulted in 47 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in 2005.

This was the highest level since 2001 and is being blamed on the growing demand for energy, coupled with the increased use of coal and peat in electricity generation.

SEI says the current situation is unsustainable and more must be done to reduce demand, improve energy efficiency and boost the use of renewable energy sources.
