A clean-up operation is getting underway in Donegal this morning following flash floods yesterday afternoon that led to a number of people being rescued from their homes by the emergency services.

Torrential downpours caused two rivers to burst their banks in the Gweedore area, with flood waters quickly rising to engulf homes and businesses in the villages of Derrybeg and Bunbeg.

A mother and daughter had to be rescued from the top floor of their home after the lower floor was surrounded by water.

Several local businesses were affected and roads were closed as the waters continued to rise.

The flash flood came as a major surprise as the rest of the country was basking in sunshine throughout yesterday.
