US officials have released video footage of a bearded Saddam Hussein undergoing medical examination after his capture near Tikrit.

The dramatic capture was confirmed by Paul Bremer, head of the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq, with the words: "Ladies and gentlemen - we got him."

The US-led raid - codenamed Operation Red Dawn - on the town of Ad Dawr, near Tikrit, involved 600 troops and not a shot was fired.

Saddam was described as being talkative and co-operative by the US military. The capture came at 5.30pm GMT last night, after US forces received intelligence on two possible hideouts in the town.

Mr Bremer said Saddam was taken without resistance from a "spider hole" in which he had taken cover. Two AK-47 rifles, a pistol and $750,000 (€611,000) were also recovered in the raid.

Saddam was taken into US custody and is being held at an undisclosed location. Mr Bremer said: "Iraq's future has never been more full of hope. The tyrant is a prisoner."

The US military said Saddam suffered no injuries in the raid and was in good health.
