79 charges brought against gardaí, says Commissioner

Criminal charges have been brought against a total of 79 gardaí in the past three years, according to media reports today.

The charges include assault, larceny, public order and drink driving offences.

Garda Commissioner Pat Byrne disclosed the figures last night as he strongly defended the Force's efforts to root out any wrong-doing by members of the Gardaí.

Byrne claimed that a total of 25 gardaí have either been dismissed, constructively dismissed or asked to resign from the 12,000-strong force since he became Commissioner six and a half years ago.
