Nurses warns of industrial action over cutbacks

The Irish Nurses Organisation has warned that its members may engage in industrial action if cutbacks in the health service continue unabated.

The Irish Nurses Organisation has warned that its members may engage in industrial action if cutbacks in the health service continue unabated.

The organisation held an emergency debate on the cuts yesterday after learning that James Connolly Memorial Hospital in Dublin was planning to cancel all elective admissions from today and seriously curtail its accident and emergency services.

Earlier this week, Dublin's five main teaching hospitals - the Mater, Beaumont, St Vincent's, St James' and Tallaght - announced plans to close 250 beds due to budgetary restraints.

Mary Fogarty, the INO's industrial relations officer, said the cutbacks are putting lives at risk.
