I'm fit to play for England - Beckham

David Beckham believes he is fit enough to a good job for England in the friendly with Croatia at Ipswich on Wednesday.

David Beckham believes he is fit enough to a good job for England in the friendly with Croatia at Ipswich on Wednesday.

The England captain trained with his international colleagues and there were concerns his fitness may not be up to the mark of the home-based members of the squad, for whom the Barclaycard Premiership season kicked off at the weekend.

Real Madrid’s defence of the Spanish title does not begin until the end of August, and Beckham believes he is almost up to speed.

He told Sky Sports News: “Fitness-wise I feel great. It’s always been quite good and I don’t think I’ll have a problem on Wednesday.

“It’s good to be here. There were questions whether I would be here for this friendly but it was important for me to be here, one because I love being captain and two I like joining up with these players and being around them.

“It’s important I get back playing for my country. My back is a little bit tired because we [Real Madrid] had a tough week training last week. When we were in Asia we weren’t able to do any proper pre-season training so last week was tough, two sessions a day.

Asked how it felt to be back in England, Beckham added: “It’s nice to be somewhere where the players speak the same language as you but to be fair the Real players have been great to me. They’ve been trying to talk to me in English and teaching me a bit of Spanish, so it works both ways.”
