Two Derry men were charged at a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court in Dublin today in connection with the attempted robbery of a cash delivery in Dublin’s north city on Wednesday.

Charles Anthony Deery (aged 41), a native of Derry with an address at Aughrim St, Dublin and Dermot Mc Fadden (aged 38), of Kildrum Gardens, Creggan, Derry were each charged with the possession of a firearm or imitation firearm while committing an offence under the Road Traffic Act at Manor St, Dublin 7 on June 8.

They were also each charged with the possession of a firearm with intent to commit a robbery at Prussia St, Dublin 7 on the same date.

Deery was also charged with membership of an illegal organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army, otherwise Oglaigh na hEireann, otherwise the IRA on the same date.

Neither man said anything when formally charged and both men remained seated during the brief proceedings.

Detective Garda Declan Moran gave evidence of arresting Deery at the Bridewell Garda Station today. He said that Deery made no reply when he was told he was to be charged.

Detective Garda Dennis Hellard gave evidence of arresting Mc Fadden at the Bridewell Garda Station today. He said that Mc Fadden made no reply when he was informed he would be charged at the Special Criminal Court.

The court remanded both men in custody until June 24. The two men were arrested after a cash box was stolen from a security guard making a cash delivery at Prussia St.

The cash box was recovered and no money was stolen during the attempted robbery.
