The British prime minister, Tony Blair, is currently meeting with Sinn Fein representatives, headed by president Gerry Adams, to discuss the growing crisis in the Northern peace process.
Mr Blair is expected to inform Gerry Adams that, to avoid the resignation of the UUP leader, David Trimble, his government will be suspending devolution again within days.
It is the first face to face talks between the two men since the police raid on Sinn Fein offices last week, following which a number of people were charged.
On his way into the meeting Mr Adams said the meeting’s importance cannot be underestimated.
"We will advise strongly against any expulsion of Sinn Fein. The demands being put by Mr Trimble are that our party should be expelled.
"There is no basis for such demands and Mr Trimble knows that. There is also considerable speculation that the British prime minister may be suspend the institutions and we will strongly advise against that."
