McGuinness confident report will give IRA 'clean bill of health'

Sinn Féin's chief-negotiator has said he is confident the IRA will be given a 'clean bill of health' in the forthcoming report by the Independent Monitoring Commission.

Sinn Féin's chief-negotiator has said he is confident the IRA will be given a 'clean bill of health' in the forthcoming report by the Independent Monitoring Commission.

The report was delivered to the Irish and British governments last week and is expected to be published in the coming days.

But the Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has hinted that the report may accuse specialist IRA units of criminal activity.

Martin McGuinness insisted that the IRA has refrained from all forms of activity since it announced the end of its armed campaign in July.

He said it was now time for Unionists to recognise that they could no longer use IRA activity as an excuse for not moving forward with the peace process.
