World number one Serena Williams was still not satisfied even though a 6-4 6-2 victory over Kim Clijsters carried her to the final of the Nasdaq-100 Open in defence of her title in Miami.
Although the third-seeded Belgian had held match points against the American at the Australian Open in January, Clijsters never looked like getting so close this time.
But Williams was self-critical after her 80-minute win.
“My trainer said she thought I played good, but you know I’m always really tough on myself and really rough on myself,” the defending champion said. “And I don’t think my form was up to par today.”
Clijsters, despite being on a 10-match winning streak, looked spent and jaded, and was barely even a shadow of the player who led Serena by 5-1 in the final set in the Melbourne semi-final.
Clijsters once bounced her racket angrily on the ground, but it was almost the only fight she had left.
“I couldn’t bring myself back to the level necessary to compete. I’m taking four or five weeks off after that,” she said.
Williams was content to accept what had come her way.
“I don’t think I made too many of my shots, but I figured that if I made just a few of them, then I would be all right.”
