Vitamin stops alcohol brain damage

Australian researchers say drinkers can avoid brain damage by adding a vitamin to alcohol.

Scientists have found a significant relationship between vitamin B1 and the working memory of heavy drinkers.

Researcher Dr Maggie Ambrose says the vitamin should be added to alcohol as alcoholics would forget to take the pill themselves.

Adding the vitamin to 6,000 bottles of beer would only cost a few pence - a hugely cost effective way of preventing alcohol-related brain injury.

University of Melbourne academics studied 107 drinkers detoxifying from alcohol addiction. Those given injections of vitamin B1 performed best in memory tests.

The new research will be published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research.
