Death toll rises to 12 in Spanish rail crash

At least nine people are now believed to have died after a train hit a van on a level crossing in Southeastern Spain.

At least 12 people are now believed to have died after a train hit a van on a level crossing in Southeastern Spain.

Local Government officials say the final death toll may be as high as 11 following the accident near Lorca.

The van is reported to have attempted to cross the line as the train approached.

Spanish police said all the dead victims were travelling in the van, which was carrying immigrants from Ecuador.

A number of people on the train, which was carrying 25 passengers, were also injured in the accident.
