The Seanad is due to elect a new Cathaoirleach when it convenes at noon today.
Fianna Fail’s Rory Kiely is favourite for the position and the party’s Seanad majority should ensure his election.
The 68-year-old Co Limerick man was first elected to the Seanad in 1977 and only lost his seat once for a brief period in the early 1980s.
