A 15-year-old boy is the 11th person to die following a fire at a Dutch disco-bar on New Year's Eve.

Peter Veerman has died of his wounds in a hospital in Groningen.

The fire broke out at the Heaven disco in Volendam, 13 miles north of Amsterdam. Most of the victims were teenagers.

Some 108 of the more than 200 injured are still recovering in special trauma centres in Holland, Belgium and Germany.

Forty are in intensive care units, with some "in an extremely grave condition," municipal spokesman Cor Kwakman said.

The fire broke out after midnight when sparklers ignited Christmas decorations hanging from the ceiling.

Officials have confirmed the decorations were not flame-resistant, although this is required by regulations.

Only one emergency exit was accessible to the hundreds of partygoers trying to get out of the cramped building.

Prosecutors have opened an investigation to see if the Heaven's owner and his 24-year-old daughter who worked at the bar can be charged with criminal offences.
