Trimble warns of consequences for peace

Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble has warned of the "inevitable consequences" of the IRA's failure to begin decommissioning.

Speaking after a meeting of his officer board, Mr Trimble says he will ask party members for their views.

David Trimble heard a report today from the review group set up by his ruling council to discuss decommissioning.

Mr Trimble said that no one should be under any illusions that there would be no consequences if the IRA failed to make any progress.

"We will have to go forwards or we will go backwards," he said.

Mr Trimble said he would be beginning consulting the constituency grass roots on Monday and come to a decision on where to go next by the end of the month.

Anti-Agreement MP Jeffrey Donaldson left the meeting apparently satisfied, saying a new Ulster Unionist Council meeting must take place early in February.
