Five young children have been burned to death after a thatched room caught fire in an Indian village.

The three boys and two girls - all aged between two and five - were playing in the room in the backyard of a house in Baunsadiha, near Baripada, at the time of the blaze.

Adults in the home rushed to the makeshift room after hearing the screams of the children, but they could not save them.

Four of the victims belonged to different families in the village. The fifth was visting relations from a neighbouring village.
