A father shot dead three of his children before killing himself after a stand-off with police in Texas.

A fourth child survived but was seriously wounded.

Police negotiated through the night with Timothy Lee Rumsey who was threatening to kill the four children.

When they finally got inside the house, they found Rumsey's body, the three dead children and the injured daughter.

Police heard no shots, but a pistol was found near Rumsey's body.

Police say the unemployed 42-year-old was found in a bedroom cupboard with his daughter Kirstie, seven, his nine-year-old son Dylan, and Brittany Whalen, aged 11, a child from his wife's previous marriage.

All had been shot dead.

Two-year-old Haylee was found alive in the closet but with a bullet wound that nearly severed her left arm.

She was taken to hospital where surgeons worked to save her arm.

The incident began on Sunday night when Rumsey's wife, Joy, fled the house in Houston and called the police, saying Rumsey had guns and she feared for her children's safety.

Rumsey had recently lost his job and had a history of depression and drug use.
