Construction industry threatens rise in costs if PRSI changes not reversed

The Construction Industry Federation is calling on the Government to reverse its changes to PRSI or it will increase building costs even further.

The Construction Industry Federation is calling on the Government to reverse its changes to PRSI or it will increase building costs even further.

In its annual economic review the CIF said the decision to remove the ceiling on employers PRSI was anti-job creation.

The construction industry is now the biggest single employer in the country with 175,000 people involved in the sector.

The Director General of the CIF Liam Keller predicted that growth this year would dip below 10% for the first time since 1994.

He said there was a slow down due to the bad weather in the latter part of 2000.

However, the CIF is deeply concerned about budget measures to remove the ceiling on employer PRSI.

The Federation said the increase would cost the industry £30m in 2002 and this would have a knock on effect on all services.

The CIF said the measures must be reversed as they were anti-job creation and flew in the face of the Government's intention to tackle inflation.
