An emergency session of the 22-member standing committee of the ASTI discussing proposals aimed at getting direct talks underway to resolve the teachers' pay dispute is currently taking place at the Burlington Hotel in Dublin.

The standing committee is to pass the proposals on to the union's executive council to consider whether they are enough to allow their leaders to resume talks. However, sources say there is no certainty the formula will be accepted by the council's 180 members.

Today's discussions follow five days of intensive 'talks about talks'. They have so far led to the suspension of regional strikes in support of the teachers' 30% pay demands.
