The price of a litre of petrol has remained stable over the last two months, according to the Automobile Association.
A litre of diesel currently costs 83.4 cents and is holding remarkably steady in recent weeks, the latest national survey on fuel prices revealed.
The AA points out that its survey would be reporting an actual drop in prices in the last quarter were it not 5 cent per litre added to the cost of fuel in the last budget.
Public affairs manager Conor Faughnan said : "This is certainly a pity.
"The motoring consumer has lost out annually to the tune of €200m because of that latest creeping tax rise," he added.
Faughnan also said that while the international market is out of motorists' control they can still be vilgilant domestically as fuel prices vary considerably from one service station to the next.
