Kevin Blackwell has denied West Brom midfielder Sean Gregan was at the top of his summer shopping list.
But the Leeds boss did confirm he was hopeful of completing a deal to bring Chelsea misfit Neil Sullivan to Elland Road within “the next three or four days”.
Blackwell has been one of the busiest men in the game during the close season, drafting in nine new players while releasing an astonishing 21 as the West Yorkshire club strive to further reduce their massive debts and adjust to life in English football’s second tier.
And the former Sheffield United number two has not finished wheeling and dealing yet with a goalkeeper, two midfielders and a winger still required to complete his first-team squad.
Chelsea’s former Tottenham goalkeeper Sullivan is the likely answer to his goalkeeping problem with Blackwell keen to bring in an old head to work alongside the promising, but inexperienced Scott Carson.
“At the moment Gregan is not necessarily at the top of my list,” Blackwell told the Press Association, despite news that West Brom had today completed the signing of Jonathan Greening from Middlesbrough for £1.25m (€1.9m).
“I’m looking at all sorts of players and if the names of any quality player come my way I’ll always be interested.
“Sean Gregan is someone I’ve been made aware of, but I’ve not really pursued that one at all. Sully has been training with us this week and has done okay – I’m hoping to keep him here, but now it’s down to negotiations between the two clubs.
“I reckon I’ll know one way or another within the next three to four days.”
Former Scottish international Sullivan did not figure in former Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri’s first-team plans at all last season after arriving from Spurs in the summer of 2003.
New Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has recently acquired the services of Czech Republic international Petr Cech and he will vie for the number one jersey with Carlo Cudicini, leaving Sullivan out in the cold.
Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Chris Bart-Williams has impressed Blackwell since he arrived recently on trial and former Leicester wide man Steve Guppy is another to have been handed an extended trial.
“I’ve also been linked with (Aliou) Cisse at Birmingham and some others I haven’t even heard of,” Blackwell added.
“I did intend to go and have a look at Cisse for Birmingham against Sheffield Wednesday earlier this week, but he didn’t play, while there’s another lad with Premiership experience who could be an option.”
