Couple sue in rat invasion row

A luxury home was described as ‘‘a house of horrors’’ in a lawsuit filed by an engaged couple in San Francisco.

Dwight Chambers and Kristin Wakeman said the €4,820-a-month rented house was infested with rats. The couple and their 10-year-old daughter said they battled every day against the vermin, who had nested right through the property.

Within six months, all three suffered from rashes, fevers and headaches, which they claim were caused by close contact with live or dead rats.

‘‘Whenever we turned the heater on, it was blowing rat faeces throughout the house,’’ Chambers told the San Francisco Chronicle. An exterminator crew finally carried out several rubbish sacks packed with dead rodents, he said.

The family is seeking damages for reimbursement of medical bills and other expenses. ‘‘It was not in the ghetto. It was not in a Third World country,’’ said their lawyer. ‘‘They had a nightmare of a time.’’
