Health and safety officials in the North and the Republic have launched a cross-border campaign aimed at reducing the number of deaths in the construction industry.

Figures shows 220 Irish workers died in accidents on building sites between 1993 and 2002, the majority of them in the Republic.

Nine people have already died in construction-related accidents this year.

The Republic's Health and Safety Authority and the North's Health and Safety Executive are hoping to devise joint initiatives to reduce the number of accidents.
