Soccer: Hendrie set for Villa contract talks

Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie is set to open talks over a new contract.

Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie is set to open talks over a new contract.

Villa manager John Gregory had indicated that he would have discussions in the summer over a new deal with Hendrie.

But Hendrie's agent will initially meet with Gregory in early February, even though the player is only halfway through a five year contract.

Hendrie has already indicated that he will be signing for Villa for life after coming through the junior ranks.

The former England Under-21 player said: "Since I showed an interest in signing a new deal there have been some developments.

"My agent is due to meet with the manager next month to try to get something set up.

"I don't know how long it will take but there is no problem from my point of view.

"I've got two more seasons left of my current five-year contract. I want a long-term deal.

"But I'd be happy enough if Villa wanted me to sign again soon. This is my club and I am a local lad, Why would I want to leave."

Meanwhile Gregory saw his latest transfer target, prolific Spanish striker Javi Moreno, hit the target for Alaves against Las Palmas last night after flying out to watch the 26-year-old.

Gregory is keen to bring in Moreno who has a clause in his contract which allows him to talk with any club who offer £6million for his services.

The player has been a consistent marksmen this season and scored his 18th goal of the campaign against Las Palmas.

Moreno is also understood to have been watched by West Ham and Derby and is also a target for Valencia.
