Taribo West has put pen to paper and agreed to stay with Derby until the end of the season.
The club had a verbal agreement with the Nigerian defender but doubts about his future plans surfaced when he went AWOL following the World Cup qualifier against Sudan.
West finally reappeared at Derby five days later and he has now confirmed he is happy to help them in their battle to escape relegation.
Derby chief executive Keith Loring said: "We had an agreement in principle and although it has taken some time for us to be able to sit down with Taribo we were confident he wanted to stay.
"It was just a matter of finding the opportunity with his international commitments and the run of fixtures we've had over the past couple of weeks."
It is just the boost manager Jim Smith needs after the midweek FA Cup defeat by First Division Blackburn.
West is expected to play a key role when Derby travel to Champions League contenders Leeds.
He arrived from Italian giants AC Milan in November and signed a three-month contract. Derby's performances picked up after his arrival, although they are still struggling to survive in the Premiership.
