Algeria quake effort focus on supplying relief

The United Nations today called off the search for victims of the earthquake in Algeria to concentrate on supplying relief and support to the survivors.

The decision comes three days after the quake, which measured 6.8 on the Richter scale, hit the north African country, claiming at least 1,700 lives.

International teams of rescuers were informed of the decision to move into a relief, recovery and rebuilding phase this afternoon, said Willie McMartin, leader of Britain’s International Rescue Corps in Algeria.

“It has now been at least 24 hours since the last survivor was found and officials have decided that other risks such as infection must be tackled,” Mr McMartin said.

“With temperatures reaching almost 40C (104F), there is an immediate need for disinfectant to be sprayed.

“There is very little chance of anyone been found alive now, and emphasis must now be put on protecting against disease, as bodies are starting to rot.

“We were told that the rescue phase had finished at 14.00 today. It is very evident that all the rescue teams are returning to a main base, where foreign teams are working from.”

Searchers have checked every building at least twice and there is no work for those who have been flying in to help, said Mr McMartin.

Aid may be offered in the next phase of the operation by some, but the majority of teams are likely to leave either tomorrow or Monday, he added.

International teams, made up of around 1,000 workers, have been based in the town of Boumerdes, within miles of the quake epicentre.

Bodies continue to be pulled from the rubble by rescuers using specially trained dogs and listening devices.

Algerian authorities have said the death toll is likely to rise.
