Two charged with Irish nun's murder

Two men have been charged with the murder of Irish nun Theresa Egan in Saint Lucia and are to appear in court today.

20-year-old Kim John and 34-year-old Francis Philip are charged with murder, attempted murder, arson, causing harm and causing grievous harm.

72-year-old Sister Theresa Egan died when attackers burst in as 400 worshippers were lined up for Communion during mass at a local cathedral last Sunday, and launched an attack with machetes and a blowtorch.

A priest and 12 others were seriously injured in the attack.

The arrests were made shortly after the New Year’s Eve incident and the two men have been in police custody ever since. John and Philip allegedly told police that they were Rastafarian prophets, however local Rastafarian leaders have condemned the attack as an abuse of the good name of the movement. The pair will be formally charged when they appear in court today.
