A suspected ETA gunman has been foiled as he attempted a Hollywood-style jailbreak.

A guard spotted inmate Jon Igor Solana, 26, as he used a knotted sheet to try to slip down a wall in the pre-dawn escape attempt in Vitoria, Spain.

He earlier sawed through cell bars and used gymnasium gear to climb a wall.

It is not known what Solana used to cut his way out of his cell at the prison in Nanclares de Oca in the Basque province of Alava.

Solana and another member of Eta were arrested in Seville in October after they allegedly shot and killed a military doctor.
