Fine Gael leader John Bruton has said he forgives Michael Noonan and Jim Mitchell for challenging his stewardship of the party.

The former Taoiseach is facing a motion of no confidence tomorrow, tabled by his front bench colleagues.

Deputy Bruton said he is convinced that he will win, saying both men are mistaken if they think they can oust him, although they are welcome to work with him in the future.

Fine Gael is split down the centre over the contest.

Several TDs have come out in favour of Mr Bruton's removal, such as Olivia Mitchell, Louis Belton and Seymour Crawford.

Bruton loyalists include deputy leader Nora Owen, chief whip Charlie Flanagan and Enda Kenny.
