New figures show that almost a quarter of all Irish students have experimented with solvents.

New figures show that almost a quarter of all Irish students have experimented with solvents.

According to the Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation, 22% of Irish students have sampled the dangerous substances, causing great concern in the Government.

This latest research comes in the wake of disturbing figures on the level of alcohol and drug abuse by the country's young people.

Junior Minister with responsibility for the National Drugs Strategy, Eoin Ryan, said the figures showed the need to increase awareness of the dangers of inhaling glue and other solvents.

There is a high risk of sudden death associated with experimentation with such dangerous substances.

Minister Ryan said it was essential that initiatives were put in place to divert young people away from regular drugs use and into more healthy and productive activities.
