Lucie Blackman's father says he has no plans to travel to Japan until DNA tests are carried out to find if human remains found on a beach near Tokyo are those of his daughter.
He says he started to fear the worst about his daughter's plight when Joji Obara was arrested in October.
The remains were found near the seaside apartment of Japanese businessman Obara, 48, who was arrested in October and accused of drugging and raping several women.
Tim Blackman said: "It seems the awful truth is unfolding at the moment. It's not clear whether this is Lucie or not. We are just going to sit tight until the DNA tests are carried out. We want to know what happened to Lucie, ideally we want to bring her body back home."
When asked whether there was any hope that Lucie might still be alive, Mr Blackman said: "It seems pretty unlikely I'm afraid."
Lucie, 22, disappeared in July last year after telling a friend she was going on a drive to the ocean with a client.
