The UN is trying to confirm reports that the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Laurent Kabila, has been assassinated in an attempted coup.
The UN in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, has been told that rebels attempted to stage a coup in the country.
A Ugandan intelligence source reportedly told a news agency that he was "101% certain" that Kabila was killed but there is no confirmation of the report.
A CNN correspondent in Nairobi said it's believed the attempted coup may have been carried out by supporters of the former ruler Mobuto, whom Kabila toppled in May 1997.
UN spokesman Fred Eckhart said Kabila had been due to attend a Franco/African summit in the Cameroon capital, Yaounde, and the UN is checking with authorities there to see if president Kabila has arrived.
