Two climbers have died in an avalanche in the Scottish Highlands.

Northern Constabulary said the unnamed men were reported overdue from a climb on Beinn Dearg, Braemore, in Wester Ross, at 11.20pm yesterday.

Mountain rescuers found the bodies of the climbers at 7.15am at the foot of Penguin Gully following an avalanche.

Police said the recovery operation was called off because of atrocious weather conditions in the mountains, where further avalanches were expected.

A police spokesman said: "Due to the weather in the area a helicopter is not able to assist and the bodies will have to be carried out."
