A group of eight independents have formed an alliance to stand in the next general election on health issues.

The Independents Health Alliance is promising to eradicate hospital waiting lists within three years and provide better services for carers, the elderly and the disabled.

Opinion polls have shown the upcoming election is likely to be fought on a health platform and the independent group is hoping to gain some ground on the Government by criticising its failures over the last five years.

However, this morning support for the Government remains strong, with 59% of those interviewed in an opinion poll in favour of a return of the Fianna Fail/Progressive Democrats coalition.
