Loyalist protesters from Upper Ardoyne in north Belfast are expected to resume their demonstration outside the Catholic Holy Cross school this morning.

There were hopes that both sides could engage in dialogue over the mid-term break, but the loyalist side has refused to speak to the Catholic parents in protest at the police handling of their dispute.

The loyalists have also complained about increased attacks on their homes by local nationalists.

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, said yesterday that whatever the rights and wrongs of the situation, the schoolchildren and their parents have suffered intolerable psychological damage.

He said that, if David Trimble is re-elected as First Minister today, he should make solving the dispute his first priority.
