A Saudi man convicted of murder was beheaded today, Saudi Arabia’s Interior Ministry announced in Riyadh.
Fahhad bin Hadi al-Iefan said he shot dead Baddah bin Mishnan al-Doussry to avenge an earlier dispute, the ministry said. It was not clear what the dispute was about.
The execution, the ninth beheading this year, took place in Riyadh, the capital.
Last year, at least 49 people, including two women, were beheaded, down from 81 in 2001.
Under laws rooted in a strict interpretation of Islam, Saudi Arabia imposes the death penalty for murder, rape, apostasy (abandoning one's religion), drug trafficking and armed robbery.
Beheadings are carried out in public with a sword.
